Dr. Zheng received his B.S. degree from Zhejiang University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Caltech, where he was awarded the Caltech Demetriades Thesis Prize. At UConn, he leads the Smart Imaging Laboratory, where his research focuses on developing advanced imaging and sensing tools to address measurement challenges in biology, medicine, and metrology. Dr. Zheng is recognized for his pioneering work on Fourier ptychography, which has been adopted worldwide and is now a standard tool in microscopy imaging. This technique has also become a chapter in Joseph Goodman's classic textbook "Introduction to Fourier Optics (4th edition)". Dr. Zheng has published more than 100 articles, including those in top-tier journals like Nature Photonics, Nature Reviews Physics, Nature Protocols, Light: Science & Applications, and PNAS. His research has been cited over 12,000 times (Google Scholar profile) and he has been named in the World's Top 2% Scientists released by Stanford University in both Single-Year and Career tracks.

Dr. Pierce received the B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees (with S.D. Sheppard) from Stanford University, CA, all in mechanical engineering. Additionally, he received a Ph.D. -Minor degree in mathematics from Stanford University and completed his Habilitation (Venia Legendi) in experimental and computational biomechanics (with G.A. Holzapfel) at the Graz University of Technology, Austria. With the Interdisciplinary Mechanics Laboratory at UConn he studies the theory, development and application of pragmatic computational methods for physical problems of practical importance using computational and experimental solid (bio)mechanics, finite element methods, applied mathematics, and corollary programming/software.
