Guoan Zheng

Professor

Biomedical Engineering

The research of the Smart Imaging Laboratory led by Dr. Zheng focuses on developing advanced imaging and sensing tools to address challenging measurement problems in biology, medicine, and metrology. The Fourier ptychography technology developed by Dr. Zheng and his colleagues is now a chapter in “Introduction to Fourier Optics (4th edition)”, the most widely-read textbook in Fourier optics. Dr. Zheng’s contributions have resulted in the publication of one book and more than 130 peer-reviewed articles, including those in top-tier journals such as Nature Photonics, Nature Reviews Methods PrimersNature Reviews Physics, eLightNature Protocols, Light: Science & Applications, and PNAS. His research has been cited over 14,000 times, with an h-index of 62 (Google Scholar profile). Dr. Zheng has been listed in the World’s Top 2% Scientists released by Stanford University since 2020.

The lab’s current research areas include high-throughput imaging and screening, ultraviolet spectroscopy, coded ptychographic microscopy and endoscopy, optical synthetic aperture imaging, and neural fields. Since 2015, the lab’s research has been supported by the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Connecticut Innovations, the UConn Research Excellence Award, and multiple industry partners.
